SUGGESTED AL-ANON PREAMBLE

The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems.  We believe alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution: does not engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any cause.  There are no dues for membership.  Al-Anon is self-supporting through it's own voluntary contributions.

Al-Anon has but one purpose:  to help families of alcoholics.  We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by  giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

SERENITY PRAYER

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Thought for the Day

The mutual sharing of experience, strength, and hope at Al-Anon meetings release us from individual isolation and loneliness.

Hope for Today pg 224

I need only turn myself over one minute, one hour, one day at a time.

Hope for Today pg 157

Today's reminder:

I may have big troubles but I can, if I will, make them less painful by turning my thoughts to happier things.  I will not isolate myself in my problems.  I will observe and enjoy what is good and pleasant in the world around me.

AL-ANON/ALATEEN DECLARATION

LET IT BEGIN WITH ME - WHEN ANYONE ANYWHERE REACHES OUT FOR HELP, LET THE HAND OF AL-ANON/ALATEEN ALWAYS BE THERE AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME.

WHAT IS ALCOHOLISM?

Alcoholism is widely recognized as a disease of compulsive drinking, which can be arrested, but not cured. It is a progressive illness, which will get only worse as long as the person continues to drink. Total abstinence from drinking is the only way to arrest the disease. Alcoholism affects the entire family; indeed, everyone who has contact with the alcoholic is affected. Unfortunately, the only person who can stop the alcoholic from drinking is the alcoholic himself or herself.
